Candlenut Restaurant

Reached Singapore and have been trying out new lunch and dinner places! :)

So since I'm peranakan, I was excited of the traditional peranakan restaurant Candlenut which is renowned for its buah keluak which is a peppery sauce that has been boiled for several days.

We ordered the buah keluak with chicken but you also can choose to have it with grade A5 Wagyu beef and also ordered the kueh pie tee, curry blue swimmer crab and prawns and crab soup. For dessert, we got the banana cake with fresh banana with gula Melaka ice--cream.

I thought the curry crab was good although there could have been more generous helpings of crabs. The prawn dish only had 2 prawns, how miserly is that. My spice tolerance is pretty low so I felt that the food was moderately spicy but manageable.

The kueh pie tee was disappointing. Kueh pie tee is normally a dish of both vegetables and prawn in a crispy shell. The shell was crisp and good, but the vegetables were sliced roughly and the sauce for the kueh pie tee wasn't really good.

The banana cake was average, didn't feel that the banana cake brought out the flavors / it wasn't fluffy or had the right balance of texture. The cameralized banana was a little too much and the gula melaka ice-cream was overly thick.

Overall, I thought the food was pretty alright but didn't command the high prices that they charged.
